This course provides participants with the knowledge and skills required to fulfil the role of a Health and Safety Representative (HSR) in Western Australia, as defined under the Work Health and Safety Act 2020 

HSRs are elected by their peers to represent employee views on work health and safety (WHS) matters in the workplace. The primary role of an HSR is to liaise with staff to identify health and safety concerns and communicate these to management. 

The key topics covered in this course include: 

  • Overview of the WHS legislative framework 

  • Duties of various parties 

  • Common WHS terminology 

  • The role of WorkSafe WA and penalties for non‐compliance 

  • Consultation requirements and mechanisms in the workplace

  • Role, entitlements and protections available for HSRs and Health and Safety Committees  

  • Resolving WHS issues through negotiation and conflict resolution 

  • Identifying hazards and methods for elimination or risk minimisation

  • Incident notification and investigation processes

  • Issuing Provisional Improvement Notices and directing unsafe work to cease
