Combine your talents with your values and get qualified to work in the aged care industry; you'll learn to provide personal, physical and emotional support to our elderly generation and assisting with their daily living tasks.

Jobs and Skills Australia reports that aged care and disability support are the third highest employing occupations.

This course will equip you with in-demand skills to boost your employability in a growing sector where there is a strong need for qualified aged care workers. Build on your current knowledge and take the next step to gain a specialised skill set for provision of aged care, whilst building a deeper understanding of how to empower senior clients as well as the issues concerning older people. 

Learn how to assess the needs of seniors with complex circumstances and provide support to people with dementia, be trained in a palliative approach to care and develop skills in implementing programs for seniors to enrich their lives.

Please note: this course is currently only available to students who are working in the industry and have completed the Certificate III in Individual Support. As part of this course, you will need to  undertake a work placement of approximately 150 hours.

  • plan, develop, implement and monitor programs and services for seniors
  • assess the needs of older people with complex circumstances
  • plan and conduct group and recreation programs for seniors
  • monitor services, implement and monitor health and safety policies and procedures and organise an effective work environment

In order to make an informed choice about the suitability of this course, you must take into account the essential skills and knowledge required to undertake this study.

  • excellent observational skills - to be able to identify changes in behaviour, abilities and environment
  • good communication skills to liaise/work with a range of people
  • good listening and writing skills
  • be able to deal with the physical demands of manual tasks including personal care work and lifting
  • basic problem-solving skills and the ability to respond to immediate safety risks
  • tolerance, patience and the willingness to work with people from different backgrounds and cultures
  • you are comfortable with assisting in personal care needs to both male and female patients
