This course is low fee* for residents of Western Australia and temporary residents holding certain visa types. An annual fee cap of $400 for those aged 15-24 or concession holders or $1,200 for everyone else, applies to this course. How On Campus

This qualification reflects the role of a new worker wanting to become an Allied Health Assistant and gain entry to the aged care, disability, and other health sectors.  The Allied Health Assistance works under the delegation and/or supervision of Allied Health Professionals (AHP).

Students will gain the skills to assist allied health professionals (physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech pathologists) with the implementation of therapy programs to improve a client's quality of life and independence.

Work with clients with:

  • physical and developmental disabilities
  • Mental Health conditions
  • Communication barriers
  • Supporting client rehabilitation
  • Supporting client maintenance therapy

Learning:

  • Classroom-based at Murdoch Campus – All theory and simulations will take place on campus.
  • Blended study using Blackboard LMS
  • At home study to consolidate in-class learning
  • Compulsory Work Placement of a minimum of 120 hours

Work as an Allied Health Assistant and carry out their responsibilities including:

  • understanding your role in practicing, documenting, and reporting therapeutic interventions
  • managing group activities and therapy sessions under the instruction and delegation of Allied health Professionals
  • assist Allied Health Professionals to provide therapy to meet client goals and needs
  • communicate with a diverse range of clients in healthcare settings and develop effective communication with clients and teams
  • comply with infection prevention and control policies and procedures
  • interpret and apply medical terminology appropriately.

To make an informed choice about your suitability of this course, you must consider the essential skills and knowledge required to undertake this training.

  • ability to strictly follow workplace safety standards.
  • ability to work with clients of all ages.
  • adequate fitness and mobility to support clients with physical disabilities and to participate in First Aid, which requires you to perform CPR while kneeling on the floor.
  • good hand-eye coordination
  • good time management and the ability to work with tight deadlines.
  • good communication and interpersonal skills 
  • good problem-solving skills
  • literacy and numeracy to year 10 level
