Laboratory Technician SkillLaunch Program

Applications open (closing 12 pm, Friday, 6 March 2026) 

Delivered in partnership with SLB, the Laboratory Technician SkillLaunch Program provides participants with the required entry-level laboratory skills needed to gain employment in Western Australia’s resources industry. 

Students will be paid while completing units at South Metropolitan TAFE Fremantle, which suits the role of a field lab specialist with SLB.

The program covers full tuition fees and related expenses and provides a 10-week living allowance. Classes start in April 2026. 

Please note that only applications from Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander persons will be considered.

The program covers training costs and related expenses to support you in your learning  journey, including: 

  • Full tuition fees and related expenses
  • Living allowance for 10 weeks of the program
  • Personal Protection Equipment (PPE)
  • Guest speakers
  • Site visits
  • JSC employability sessions

This program offers an entry-level pathway into Sample Catcher roles, providing students with experience and foundational skills, including: 
 

  • Understanding site safety and its link to health and safety
  • Collecting and preparing samples
  • Measuring and recording the results of experiments
  • Maintaining and working in a laboratory environment across the physical, chemical, biological and life sciences fields 

Course: Field and Laboratory Sampling and Testing Skill Set

Dates: 20 April 2026 to 26 June 2026

Duration: 10 weeks, Monday to Thursday, 8am to 4pm 

Location: Fremantle campus, 1 Fleet Street, Fremantle

Applicants must be 18 years of age and have the following essential skills and knowledge: 

  • Ability to work well with others and good communication skills
  • High level of interest in science and chemistry
  • Normal colour vision
  • Ability to strictly follow workplace safety standards

  • Session 1: Monday 9 February 2026, 11.00am to 12.30pm
  • Session 2: Tuesday 17 February 2026, 2.00pm to 3.30pm
  • Session 3: Wednesday 25 February 2026, 5.00pm to 6.30pm
  • Session 4: Wednesday 4 March 2026 (time to be confirmed)

2. You can submit the Expression of Interest form(opens in a new tab) at anytime before 12pm, Friday, 6 March 2026 (even if you haven't attended an information session). 

3. Interviews will be held by Wednesday, 11 March 2026

4. Successful applicants will be contacted with an offer of a place by Friday, 20 March 2026

Units have been chosen from MSL30122 Certificate III in Laboratory Skills and the MSL20122 Certificate II in Sampling and Measurement, to create the Field and Laboratory Sampling and Testing Skill Set.
