The era of digital domination is here and with it comes the rise of immersive media – its been a gamechanger in skills that students need in the world of creative industries. Enter - the new Immersive Media Studio at South Metropolitan TAFE!

"It’s a cutting-edge facility that allows students to design, be creative and innovate. It gives you solid experience of what it’s like to work in industry."

April Owen
SM TAFE Advanced Skills Lecturer

The brand-new Immersive Media Studio at Thornlie campus was born from the convergence of media and gaming, offering a cutting-edge learning environment to cultivate skills that break into future-focused job roles across a multitude of industries.

This revolutionary space is set to transform how students engage with emerging technologies, enabling the creation of stunning digital content for films, games and multimedia applications.

Mirroring real-world professional industry settings, the studio features three collaborative learning pods where students work alongside industry specialists and multi-talented lecturers.

The bright colour palette of the studio creates an inspired learning environment and a wall mural is emblazoned with the word DREAM. The mural reflects the mantra ‘Don’t blend in, DREAM,’ encouraging students to dream big, put their wings on, push the boundaries and reach their potential.

If you’re a fan of all things virtual reality and the art of creating the interactive feel of a virtual world for the user, this studio will give you mastery of the skills behind this new-age tech.

Moving away from traditional media, the focus is on future media such as design and development, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), artificial intelligence (AI) and gamification coupled with 3D printing.

From a production perspective, the power of the podcast has never been more prevalent and video content is king in the social media and marketing worlds. Our new studio offers state-of-the-art facilities including a recording studio to allow students to harness audio production, podcasting, video editing, animation and motion graphics skills.

South Metropolitan TAFE (SM TAFE) Advanced Skills Lecturer April Owen has been a driving force in the establishment of the studio, and she says the aim was to cultivate an environment that sparks innovation.

"It’s a cutting-edge facility that allows students to design, be creative and innovate. It gives you solid experience of what it’s like to work in industry,” April said.

“We give a wide range of skillsets and once you reach the topic you’re really motivated about, it’s your opportunity to extend it,” she adds.

Students Natasha and Nidia are undertaking the ICT40120 Certificate IV in Information Technology (Immersive Technology AI and 3D Automation), training in the new studio.

“The studio’s great, there’s heaps of options to use the technology. I’ve learnt so much about the digital world with skills that can be implemented into real-life situations,” Natasha said.

Nidia is an accomplished artist also undertaking the course to elevate and complement her skillset.

“What I want to do is incorporate AI and animation and all of this new technology into my artwork and exhibition,” Nidia said.
