How On Campus

The Certificate I in Gaining Access to Training and Employment (GATE) is an introductory course that will build on your personal, social and employability skills applicable across a wide range of industries. GATE is designed to prepare and progress you for further education and training and enhance your employment opportunities.  

This course enables you to develop your skills in numeracy and literacy, communication, and digital and personal development strategies. GATE offers three study pathways:

  • Animal Studies
  • Horticulture 
  • Mini Woolies program (Retail)

   

Animal studies pathway

Under the supervision of an experienced Animal Studies lecturer, students are provided with practical experience in approaching and handling calm animals, feeding animals and handling companion animals safely. 

Students receive credit for the completed units, which can assist in gaining entry into ACM20121 Certificate II in Animal Care

Horticulture pathway

Under the supervision of an experienced Horticulture lecturer, students gain practical experience in supporting gardening and nursery work and operating basic machinery and equipment. 

Students receive credit for the completed units, which can assist in gaining entry into AHC20422 Certificate II in Horticulture or AHC21020 Certificate II in Conservation Ecosystem and Management. 

Mini Woolies program (Retail pathway)

Students will work with a Foundation Skills lecturer to develop literacy and numeracy skills, communication strategies, digital literacy and personal development strategies providing the student with the confidence to seek employment. Under the supervision of a qualified Retail lecturer, students will be provided ‘hands-on’ experience, in customer service and organising and maintaining a store environment.

The Mini Woolies environment is set up to simulate a Woolworths store to help students learn while having access to two registers, with an option for a wheelchair-accessible register, store shelving, fresh food displays, signage and shopping baskets.
