If you dream of starting a career in Conservation and Ecosystem Management, this course is the ideal first step to prepare you for entry into the industry.

Be guided by our lecturers who are experienced professionals, as you learn key skills to protect plants, animals and their habitats. You'll gain solid knowledge of how to recognise, propagate and care for plants as well as how to treat weeds, and control pests and diseases. You'll be trained in areas such as conducting ecological and cultural site inspections, maintaining native ecosystems, and implementing revegetation and restoration works.

You can develop a broad skillset to equip you for various work roles in the industry such as ecological restoration of terrestrial and wetland environments, parks and wildlife management, weed and pest control, fire management, Indigenous land management, and mine site rehabilitation.

Through your work, you will contribute to the preservation and maintenance of wildlife habitats, as you work to restore and rehabilitate areas such as our bushland, wetlands, parks, reserves, and coastal environments.

This nationally recognised qualification will get you job-ready for a range of opportunities across private, local, or state government sectors in roles such as: Bushland Maintenance Officer, Environmental Field Technician, Conservation Officer, Park Ranger, Land Rehabilitation Worker or Pest Management Technician.

During this course, you will study three units that meet the Department of Health requirements to gain a Pest Management Technician Licence to control weeds and other minor pests in lawns and gardens, landscaping, bushland or mine site rehabilitation.

Please note: Conservation and Ecosystem Management involves physical labour and students will be required to demonstrate a reasonable level of fitness and mobility.

Study in specialist facilities

Learn in our on-site native bushland which acts as an outdoor classroom and dedicated purpose-built facilities that simulate real-world working environments, including a native nursery production space featuring cutting and seed production zones and large work sheds.

Facilities also include specialised sheltered nursery areas that propagate natives for ecosystem restoration and rehabilitation, under the supervision of a project leader. Students can learn by getting hands-on with industry-specific, field-oriented practical activities in conservation work and by operating machinery and equipment.

  • conduct ecological and cultural site inspections
  • maintain native ecosystems
  • Implement biological reintroduction
  • implement revegetation and natural area restoration works
  • safely prepare, apply, transport and store chemicals,
  • treat weeds, plant pests and disorders
  • identify plants, collect seed and propagate plants
  • operate machinery and workplace safety and health

In order to make an informed choice about the suitability of this course, you must take into account the essential skills and knowledge required to undertake this study.

  • enjoyment of practical work and working in varied weather conditions outdoors
  • a passion for conservation, ecosystems and the environment
  • high fitness levels and able to carry out manual work
