How On Campus

The Certificate IV in Fitness gives you the skills and knowledge you need to become a qualified personal trainer (PT) or group personal trainer.

This rewarding career provides job versatility, and you can work as a trainer both indoors and outdoors in gyms, council run leisure and community centres, client workplaces and homes, or online. You can be employed by a gym or be self-employed, owning your studio or providing one-on-one or group training, even doing personal training as a second job and setting your own hours.

In this advanced fitness course, you will learn how to run your own business and manage client relationships, and how to develop and deliver personalised exercise programs for a range of groups from teens to seniors, athletes and people with disabilities. You will be able to apply the skills of functional anatomy and strength and conditioning techniques to your training programs.

Our courses are widely respected in the fitness industry, and you can build your technique in our new functional training centre at Murdoch and be trained by our expert lecturers with strong industry connections.

Study in specialist facilities

Industry trends are changing and advancing, and to ensure our training facilities are cutting-edge, in November 2022, we opened a brand-new functional training centre for Certificate IV in Fitness students. The centre includes a multi-rig with 8 cells, barbells, weight plates, rowers, spin bikes, kettlebells, deadballs, dumbbells, plyometric boxes and benches to teach the technique of exercises such as squats, pull-ups, benchpress, deadlifts, shoulder press and more.

Students also learn in a dedicated outdoor space to develop outdoor personal training skills.

  • Instruct and deliver personal training to a range of clients, including adolescents, seniors, athletes, and those with more complex exercise needs
  • Plan and deliver training to change client’s body composition (muscle gain and fat loss)
  • Planning and marketing your fitness business
  • Simple diet analysis, and providing healthy eating advice to clients
  • Deliver safe, effective online personal training
  • Work closely with medical and allied health professionals, and take control of your own professional development to further your skills
  • Understand workplace safety and health practices

In order to make an informed choice about the suitability of this course, you must take into account the essential skills and knowledge required to undertake this study.

  • You should have the communication skills to gather information about clients, build rapport and trust, and maintain conversations with people who may be very different from you.
  • You should have an interest in the people you work with, and their exercise, not just your own. While it’s great to be passionate about your own exercise, the role of a fitness professional is about meeting the needs of other people
  • You will need to be able to take feedback graciously (this may come from your lecturers, but also employers and clients.
  • You need to be willing to participate in a range of exercises in learning and assessment situations. There are times when you will need to participate in exercise in the role of a client, to help your classmates complete assessment tasks. They will do the same for you.
  • You will need basic computer skills. The ability to send emails, use search engines, and use basic Microsoft Office products will help you complete assessment tasks. We will help you develop your skills in this area.
  • You will need to have basic reading, writing and numeracy skills. This will allow you to take notes in class, read lesson content, and perform basic calculations.
  • You will need to be able to work safely in the gym environment. This means being aware of your surroundings, showing consideration for the people around you, and following instructions from lecturers.

This course is a blend of on-campus and off-campus learning, so you will need to consider if this mode of study is right for you. You will often be studying without lecturers present to guide you. You will need to manage your own time, complete learning and assessment tasks without supervision, and seek out help from the lecturers when you need it.

While you are welcome to schedule your study for times that suit you, this course is not self-paced. Work will need to be completed in the week it is scheduled to make sure you are ready for practical activities on campus. If you’ve previously struggled to study independently or have limited computer skills, this course may not be the right option for you.
