The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower is about supporting people with a non-visible disability and helping to provide understanding, patience and assistance in day-to-day life.
The Sunflower lanyard and accessories act as visual cues for our students and staff, encouraging them to help those who may need it. This ensures that everyone feels included, respected and supported in the best way possible at SM TAFE.
If a student wears a Hidden Disabilities Sunflower, a lecturer or client support staff can identify they may require special consideration in interactions and training delivery. It is also completely voluntary to wear the sunflower.
As part of the Sunflower Program, staff members may choose to wear a “Can I Help You?” badge. These staff members are ready to offer guidance and understanding to individuals wearing the sunflower symbol.
The power of the sunflower
A hidden disability may not be immediately apparent and can include conditions such as autism, anxiety, learning difficulties or respiratory issues, diabetes and chronic pain, amongst others.
The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower is there every day of the year to support people living with non-visible disabilities in their communities.
SM TAFE was proud to join this global initiative on Tuesday 3 December 2024, to coincide with International Day of People with Disability.
