SM TAFE hosts WorldSkills Hairdressing and Barbering competition

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

11 October 2024

South Metropolitan TAFE (SM TAFE) was proud to host the WorldSkills Australia regional competition for Hairdressing and Barbering on 30 September.

15 SM TAFE students took part in this grassroots competition at the Hair and Beauty Clinic at Murdoch campus. The initiative allows students to test their expertise and knowledge against their peers, whilst further advancing in their field and opening up potential pathways for the future.

The students demonstrated specialist skills for the judging panel, performing salon services such as client consultations, hair washing, hair colouring, fashion cuts on models and classic long hair upstyle hairdos, whilst working under the strict time constraints of a real-world salon environment.

All students are undertaking the SHB30416 Certificate III in Hairdressing or the SHB30516 Certificate III in Barbering, completing apprenticeships in hairdressing and barbering with their employer whilst also training at SM TAFE.

The winners of gold, silver and bronze medals of the regional Hairdressing and Barbering competition will be announced at a breakfast at Crown Resorts on Friday 15 November.

Participation in Worldskills is a memorable milestone in a learning journey and students that earn places will progress to competing in the National Championships in 2025. Some students even go on to represent their country and compete at international levels.

WorldSkills creates opportunities for young people to become the very best versions of themselves, providing a platform to foster communication, teamwork, organisation and leadership skills, whilst becoming empowered with the most elite skillset possible.

Competitions are designed by industry and skills experts who assess an individual’s knowledge, competence and employability skills against a strict set of criteria. More than 60 trades and skills are represented at WorldSkills competitions.

If you’re a student interested in taking part in a WorldSkills competition, speak to your lecturer about how to get involved!

SM TAFE would like to take this opportunity to wish all our students in the WorldSkills Australia regional competition the very best of luck.

Want to cut out a career in hairdressing or barbering?

Start your journey with a hairdressing or barbering apprenticeship at SM TAFE. The SHB30416 Certificate III in Hairdressing will build skills to cut hair and expertly style with various tools, as well as learn salon operations.

The SHB30516 Certificate III in Barbering will equip you with skills to become a barber, including consultation and technical expertise.

Both courses are delivered one day a week on campus whilst students are employed in a full-time training contract by an organisation to study an apprenticeship. Whilst you learn on the job, you also attend off-the-job training at SM TAFE, providing the opportunity to earn a wage whilst developing a skillset.

SM TAFE has a real-world training environment and students learn in our live Hair, Beauty & Massage Student Clinics which are open to the public for appointments.  You can follow the clinics on Facebook and Instagram.

Applications for Semester 1, 2025 are now open!
