There are two community-based venues for classes in East Fremantle and Cannington.

SM TAFE AMEP delivers the nationally accredited certificates in English as an Additional Language (EAL). There are different levels, and we will assess your English level to see where you should start.

English level - complete beginner:

What is the AMEP Volunteer Home Tutor program?

This program is a sub program of the Adult English Migrant Program (AMEP) and offers tutoring sessions to migrants and refugees outside of the classroom. These informal sessions take place face to face, in the home and is provided by trained volunteers. Students are not required to follow a set curriculum or be assessed.

Why become a volunteer?

• Learn about other cultures and languages while helping students settle in Australia
• Gain new skills, knowledge, and experience

How much time do I need to dedicate?

Tutoring sessions run once a week, for 1 hour, and we ask that volunteers commit for a minimum of 6 months.

How much experience do I need? What else do I need?

No experience is needed, and you need to complete our 15 hour training program which can be completed face to face or online which we can arrange through North Metropolitan TAFE. On-going support and online resources and ideas will be available to you.

You will be asked to provide your details, apply for free to the Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check with the Department of Education and apply for a Working with Children Check (WCC) which you will be reimbursed for.
