This course provides the job-ready skills to be a fully qualified Veterinary Nurse or to engage in meaningful work as a professional in the veterinary or wider animal care industry.

This course is low fee* for residents of Western Australia and temporary residents holding certain visa types. An annual fee cap of $400 for those aged 15-24 or concession holders or $1,200 for everyone else, applies to this course. Some eligibility conditions apply for the low fee training and other fees may apply for some courses. Please refer to the FAQs for more information.

Build a rewarding career working as part of a team and with a range of animals, great and small. This course provides the job-ready skills to be a fully qualified Veterinary Nurse or to engage in meaningful work as a professional in the veterinary or wider animal care industry.
The Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing qualification reflects the role of a veterinary nurse, working in a veterinary practice and is a requirement for those who wish to register and practice as a veterinary nurse in the state of Western Australia.
Playing an essential role in veterinary health care, a Veterinary Nurse dedicates their daily work to supporting veterinarians, providing expert patient care and maintaining and monitoring the welfare and well-being of animals. Be guided by our expert team of lecturers who are professionals in the field as you learn how to provide nursing care for sick or injured animals and support veterinarians to carry out medical and surgical procedures in the veterinary clinic.
Develop clinical skills in administering medications, providing surgical assistance, monitoring anaesthesia, radiography (x-ray), veterinary dental procedures, and nursing care, as well as daily routines such as maintaining practice hygiene and keeping equipment clean and sterilised.
This course also covers the essential communication skills required in the veterinary care industry. Veterinary nurses play an important role in communicating effectively to ensure high-quality patient care, team collaboration, and building trust with pet owners and the wider community, playing a key role in education and providing health care advice.
Training involves a significant practical element to ensure students graduate ready to enter and actively contribute to the workplace.

Study in specialist facilities
SM TAFE is the only TAFE to offer a live veterinary clinic open to the general public, staff and students to make bookings for consults and surgeries. The clinic is based at our Bentley campus and allows our student Vet Nurses real-world experience while being supervised by qualified Veterinarians and Vet Nurses.
Students can gain on-the-job skills in animal care with a range of species, including dogs, rabbits, rats, guinea pigs, lizards, fish, along with an aviary housing various birdlife. The clinic allows the development of skills in a safe and supported environment, in preparation for industry work placement.

In addition to training in our on-site veterinary clinic, students are required to attend a mandatory Industry work placement in a private veterinary practice.

Before enrolment, interested students are advised that the following are necessary to enable successful course completion. Understanding the facts can help you decide whether veterinary nursing is the right career or training pathway for you.
- To maintain current enrolment in the Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing qualification, students must be able to fulfil the on-campus attendance and training requirements
- Attend an industry workplace for the duration of your studies
- Be willing to commit to the equivalent of one day per week (8 hours) out-of-class course study activities, and can undergo self-directed research and study skills
- Have a sound working knowledge and application of computer programs, e.g. MS Word, Outlook, Excel, etc., and the ability to use an online learning management system (Blackboard) to access training resources and upload documentation.
- Attend off-campus excursions and events during teaching time
- Provide a National Police Clearance and complete a risk management assessment.
- Review the Inherent requirements of a veterinary nurse, as these reflect the core participation requirements to meet the training and assessment requirements of the qualification. They cover the essential areas of:
- Communication and working as part of a team
- Foundational language, literacy, numeracy and digital skills to support safe, competent clinical practice.
- Ability to problem solve and apply critical thinking to assessment tasks and work role requirements.
- Professional behaviour, ethical practice and compliance
- Fitness and Safety requirements
- Commitment to maintaining a safe, clean and hygienic work environment
The required training involves critical and complex tasks; you must ensure you are fit to perform them safely without risking harm to yourself, others and animals.
