This course is an entry-level qualification that will make you job ready to become an aged care assistant or care support worker, equipping you with a skillset to provide a high standard of support to older people and those living with dementia by providing personalised assistance in aged care, residential and community care settings.

Study in specialised facilities

SM TAFE campuses have training facilities which simulate real-life workplace settings and students can gain hands-on practice developing skills to be workforce ready, using industry specific equipment and following safe work practices. Our Rockingham campus has a state-of-the art purpose-built learning facility for disability home care and aged care, with dedicated areas that emulate rooms in a modified residence or aged care facility.

Gain specialised skills and be guided by our passionate team of experienced lecturers on how to provide physical and emotional support to older people whilst enabling them to maintain independence. Engage in skill development related to providing individualised support.

Facilitating the empowerment of people receiving support, supporting independence and wellbeing as well as recognising healthy body systems and understanding the principles of infection control, communication, working with diverse people and providing a safe work environment and safe work practices. 

Build your methods of communicating effectively with a range of diverse groups including families and co-workers, and you’ll also develop some strong one-on-one relationships with the people you are caring for who have had a lifetime of experience and knowledge to share, which can bring job satisfaction as you work regularly together.

In order to make an informed choice about the suitability of this course, you must take into account the essential skills and knowledge required to undertake this study.

  • excellent observational skills - to be able to identify changes in behaviour, abilities and environment
  • good communication skills to liaise/work with a range of people - clients families and co-workers
  • good listening and writing skills and the ability to follow instructions
  • be able to deal with physical demands of manual tasks
  • basic problem solving skills and the ability to respond to immediate safety risks
  • tolerance, patience and the willingness to work with people from different backgrounds and cultures
  • you are comfortable with assisting in personal care needs to both male and female patients
